Description
A small group opportunity for those 55 years and up to experience a gem of Kaneohe; Waikalua Loko i’a, an ancient Hawaiian fishpond. What to expect: we will walk around the fishpond in the morning as we learn its history, talk story and share our own reflections on how place- based and nature -based connections have impacted our lives. Enjoy the changing tides as they meet fresh water, a variety of marine life including frequent sightings of honu resting in the stream head. Marshland birds re-establishing. We’ll share updates on the projects that have been undertaken at the Loko i’a. There will be flexibility for strolling or finding a quiet space as you choose. Terrain and Weather- The general grounds area is wide open with uneven ground and a narrow beach strip with varying tides. The kuapa (wall) path is rocky and uneven and there is about an 18 in stepping up to the 3 makaha (sluice gates). You are welcome to find a seat nearby or walk on the grounds if you’d rather not walk out on the wall. The weather is varying- that’s what makes it fun! Come prepared for weather posted for the day. This activity will take place in rain or shine! Accommodations- At this time there are no bathrooms available on premise; porta-potties have been closed during Covid. The nearest public bathroom is at fast food locations about 5 mins away. There is no drinking water on premise- please bring a water bottle. Consider a hat and sun protection. There is a sink with running water. There are benches, tables and covered areas available. You are welcome to bring a snack to eat. Covid Safety- Masks are required to be worn. Social distancing will be implemented. Consider using a hearing amplifier if discussions may be difficult to hear at distance. Directions- Waikalua Loko I’a is found on Google maps via Kulauli st. Visitors will drive on the road past Puohala elementary road and through an open cattle gate as they drive through back of Bayview Golf course and veer left on a gravel road along Kaneohe stream. This road ends at the fishpond. ** I am excited to offer this activity with the collaboration of Pacific American Foundation ; a non profit organization that manages and stewards the preservation of the pond. A portion of participant payments will go to this fund. Contact email- if any questions, directions. [email protected]
