EAST HAVEN, CT —Mayor Joseph A. Carfora took to Facebook Thursday to warm residents who are getting calls that show East Haven Town Hall on a caller ID where a person is asking for money or personal details, it's a scam. "Everyone has been receiving an abundance of scam calls. It's one of those annoying occurrences that can happen almost daily. And with the increase of technology, scammers are using new tactics to trick victims, including spoof calls. Spoofing is when someone uses technology to change the number that shows on your caller ID. This allows the scammer to pretend to be someone they aren't," Carfora wrote. And added that the latest scam calls in East Haven are coming in "using technology to make it appear that a call is coming from within East Haven Town Hall. The caller will state they're calling on behalf of the town or the latest scam, 'Mayor Carfora.'" Carfora said folks should be aware of these scam phone calls and "be diligent when answering phone calls." When in doubt, he said, hang up and the phone and call the specific department back at East Haven Town Hall at (203) 468-3212 or the organization the caller is stating they represent.
