Description

Free/donation optional outdoor safety & self-self-defense training for AAPI people of all ages, genders, and abilities. Tuff Love Self-defense & Protect Oakland Chinatown Present AAPI PERSONAL SAFETY TRAINING Outdoor event for AAPI people of all ages, genders, and abilities. Tuff Love Self-Defense is partnering with Protect Oakaland Chinatown to offer free self-defense training in response to spiking levels of discrimination, harassment, and violence directed at the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). From March 2020 to February 2021, Stop AAPI Hate, a coalition that tracks xenophobia and discrimination against AAPI, received 3,800 reports of anti-Asian hate, over 1,600 of which were in California. Many are living in fear, scared to leave their homes, worried for their families. Perpetrators of violence hold sole responsibility for the decision to assault someone. However, individuals can take effective steps to increase their own safety. Learning what our minds, voices, and bodies can do, recognizing that we are worth defending, and giving ourselves permission to stay safe emotionally and physically is a powerful and transformative experience. Learning Skills to Change Fear into Empowerment. During this ninety-minute interactive training, you’ll learn how to protect yourself in a safe, supportive and empowered environment. This event will teach awareness and safety strategies to avoid assaults before they happen. You’ll also learn effective physical techniques addressing the most common attack situations: being pushed or pulled, cornered, rushed at or grabbed by the wrist. Rather than relying on strength, you will learn principles of leverage, timing and energy efficiency to defend against a stronger assailant. Regardless of your age, size, strength or physical ability, you can learn the techniques of safety and self-defense while gaining an increased sense of personal confidence and empowerment. You’ll leave with new tools on how to respond to harassment, whether your response is in the moment while that harassment is happening or long-term. Class includes warm-up exercises, discussion of safety principles, and instruction in specific self-defense techniques. With social distancing protocol, participants can practice solo or with a friend or family member. No experience necessary and no equipment required.
