What To Do With Yard Waste In Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, RI — Spring has arrived in Rhode Island, leading many Portsmouth residents to take advantage of the warm weather and start clearing out winter debris from their yards. Because the town doesn't have curbside trash pickup, residents have a few options to dispose of their yard waste. Residents can bring their yard waste to the transfer station, since disposal is covered under the cost of a sticker, said Brian Woodhead, the director of the Department of Public Works. Stickers must be up-to-date to qualify. For those unable to bring their yard waste to the transfer station, there are a few options at home, said Ray Antaya, the town's recycling coordinator. Residents can buy a Rhode Island Resource Recovery bin from the town for $45, and can turn their yard clippings and food scraps into nutrient-rich compost. Antaya also recommended mulching leaves using a lawn mower to help them decompose faster, then leaving them in place on the lawn to break down or using them in a compost bin or pile.
