CRANSTON, RI — A Cranston woman was hit and killed while walking her dog Thursday evening, police said. Rhonda Lobuono, 58, was hit by a truck as she crossed the street.
Cranston police said the crash happened at the intersection of Intervale Road and Aqueduct Road just before 4:15 p.m. A pickup truck heading east on Aqueduct stopped at the three-way stop sign, police said, and was waved forward by another stopped driver.
Unbeknownst to the driver of the pickup truck, Lobouno was crossing the street in front of him , police said. There is no crosswalk at the intersection. Witnesses told police that here dog, a larger breed, appeared to pull her forward.
The driver pulled forward, hitting Lobuono at a slow speed, police said. Because the truck was tall, police said they did not believe she was in his field of vision as she crossed. She died before officers arrived, and her dog received minor injuries, police said. It was later released to her next of kin.
Police said the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. No traffic violations or criminal charges are expected, and he showed no signs of impairment, officials said. Police called the incident a tragic accident.
