Description
Press release from Pleasanton Unified School District: March 26, 2021 'Every 15 Minutes' will be presented to juniors and seniors of Amador Valley High School (AVHS) from March 24-31. This emotional program is to make high schoolers think about the impact that driving under the influence has on those around them and around the world. This year, students can view a fake crash scene that simulates a drunk driving crash. The victims of the crash will be students who will be hospitalized or arrested. In addition, the death of three students will be staged. After the crash, students involved with the program will attend a socially distanced retreat in which a speaker will share their emotional story about driving under the influence. This will show students that making the decision to drink and drive can cause so much grief through losing a classmate, friend or family member. Every 15 Minutes is hosted in partnership with the Pleasanton Police Department, Paramedics Plus, Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and AVHS, along with Pleasanton Unified School District, Eden Medical Center, Graham-Hitch Mortuary, California Highway Patrol, City of Pleasanton Streets Department, California Office of Traffic Safety and Wendy Connelly and the Amador Valley Video Production Team. This program is completely student-run, meaning committee members are solely in charge of fundraising for the event. The AVHS Every 15 Minutes committee would like to give a special thanks to First Street Tow, Graham-Hitch Mortuary, PPIE, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Amador Valley Staff & Parents. Additionally, they would like to thank speakers Wendy Reynolds, J.D., and MADD Program Specialist Deirdre Carrick. The program's name "Every 15 Minutes" is derived from the fact that 20 years ago, someone in America died every 15 minutes in an alcohol-related traffic collision. The implementation of state laws and community programs has reduced this statistic to every 50 minutes - a figure that is still unacceptable.
