FOREST PARK, IL— A man is dead after shots were fired at a Forest Park Jimmy John's on Wednesday night. According to police, officers responded to a call at around 7:49 p.m. in the 300 block of Circle Avenue about a man waving a gun around.
According to a statement from Forest Park Police, the man said, "Please don't make me do this now," before leaving the restaurant and holding the gun in his hand. Once officers arrived, "Shots were fired," police said.
The gunman was placed into custody and rushed to Loyola University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:23 p.m. It is unclear if any officers sustained gunshot wounds, but police said several officers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Since this was an officer-involved shooting, the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force will investigate the incident. So far, the task force has determined that at least one sergeant and one officer fired at the man.
Police did recover a gun from the scene, but it remains unclear if the man fired his handgun at the responding officers. A spokesperson for Forest Park PD said officers performed lifesaving measures on the man before paramedics arrived.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, the deceased was in his 30s, but an identification has not been made yet.
