NORTH READING, MA — The North Reading Police Department is warning residents to beware of scam calls and text messages making rounds through the community. North Reading police said scammers have asked for money via gift cards or Bitcoins. Police reminded residents that officials of any kind will never ask for money in these forms. If residents get a scam call, they're encouraged to hang up and call police at 978-664-3131. Some scammers have been clever with caller ID spoofing. The Federal Trade Commission warned about trusting the caller ID label that pops up on your phone: "Scammers can make any name or number show up on your caller ID. That's called spoofing. So even if it looks like it's a government agency like the Social Security Administration calling, or like the call is from a local number, it could be a scammer calling from anywhere in the world." THe FTC said.
