Description
Brought to you by GCSECA in coordination with Mohave Electric Cooperative and Hi-Line Engineering. DescriptionThis will be a 4-day staker training class hosted at Mohave Electric Cooperative and presented by Hi-Line Engineering. The training program is designed to educate and equip the staking technician to design electrical distribution facilities to adequately serve the customers of the utility. It will train the novice as well as improve the skills of the experienced employee. Through a series of twelve specialized curricula domains, the student will be trained to: Make accurate distance, line angle, and elevation measurementsLay out 1-phase and 3-phase overhead and underground line routesSpecify correct structures and assemblies for overhead & underground constructionApply the rules of the NESC in day to day design activitiesMeet with customers to negotiate and acquire property easementsObtain DOT, Corps of Engineers, and other governmental permitsSize transformers and service conductors for residential and commercial loadsLocate and specify sectionalizing devices and overvoltage protectionInspect existing lines for NESC violations, operational problems, and pole qualityThe course of study leads to certification as a qualified staking technician. The certification will be awarded after the student completes the comprehensive written tests. The training is divided into three phases of four domains each to be taught in three separate five-day seminars (beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday and ending at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday). To achieve certification, the student must attend all three seminars and pass a test for each of the twelve domains. Students may re-take any test if their first try is unsuccessful. MaterialsWorkbooks and manuals will be supplied for the specialized instruction. $40.00 is required by each participant to cover the cost of additional materials, and is calculated into the total ticketing price. Each student will be required to supply a personal copy of the National Electrical Safety Code and RUS Specifications. Each student should bring a scientific calculator and note taking materials to each seminar. The students will work class problems both in groups and individually. These problems will involve both the lookup tables and calculations based on the material contained in the manuals. The instructors will answer questions and go through the solutions to the problems. The instructors will also be available to discuss ideas and questions to a reasonable extent after normal class hours. NATIONAL ELECTRICAL SAFETY CODE: The goal is to present the National Electrical Safety Code to provide a working knowledge of the NESC and demonstrate the practical application of the rules. The focus of will be on the rules that specifically apply to distribution line design such as grounding, overhead line clearances, overload factors, strength reduction factors, ice loadings, and underground line construction. EASEMENT ACQUISITION: Easement law, land ownership rights, titles, easement descriptions, and recording easements will be presented. Valuable negotiating skills to aid in the procurement of an easement will be discussed. OBTAINING PERMITS: Typical information required for various permits, how to setup an efficient permitting process, how to establish good personnel contacts to ease the process, and how to prepare permit documents and drawings will be presented and discussed. LINE INSPECTION: The National Electrical Safety Code requires that a utility inspect its facilities periodically to ensure that they are safe and adequate to distribute electricity. Student will learn the principles of performing different types of inspections, the importance of a systematic method, the elements that should be checked, and different ways to perform the actual inspection.
