The lotus flower is a sacred plant in eastern cultures, particularly Buddhism and Hinduism. The flower appears to be floating on top of the water, but its roots go way down to the muddy bottom of the pond. Every night, the flower closes and submerges itself under the surface of the water, only to re-open the next morning with clean petals. This daily cycle of the lotus flower symbolizes rebirth, spiritual awakening, and enlightenment. "There is the mud, and there is the lotus that grows out of the mud. We need the mud in order to make the lotus." - Thich Nhat Hanh "As a lotus flower is born in water, grows in water and rises out of water to stand above it unsoiled, so I, born in the world, raised in the world having overcome the world, live unsoiled by the world." - Buddha
