Zahhak, the Legend of Serpent King is a new adaptation that attempts to study this philosophical, psychological and political Persian mythology in relation with ourselves at this time. This production has been in the making for the last 12 months, and we’re super excited to announce that it will soon premier (March 26, 27, 28, 2021). It’s been an incredible challenge for us to pull this off during the pandemic, and we are looking forward to sharing this creation with YOU, which has been a total ‘in-flow’ experience for us. The Boston Experimental Theatre Company has devised a surrealist adaptation of Ferdowsi’s story. Director Vahdat Yeganeh has been leading the company through a radically experimental rehearsal process informed by the psychological philosophy of Antonin Artaud and the experimental techniques of Jerzy Grotowski. As in the work of these artists, we strive to develop theater rooted in organic connections among artists within a minimalist production design. Every element of our performance comes from repetitive, naturally driven improvisational exercises so that each facet of the production flows out of personal, earnest passion for the project. Donya’s acting is strongly inspired by ancient Persian storytelling style that used to be performed in Persian tea houses known as “Naghali”, and Western physical theatre. Engin’s music is deeply inspired by his love for Jazz, and Vahdat’s directing is strongly inspired by his studies of both Eastern and Western Theatre. The script itself has been devised throughout rehearsals and inspired by the artistic dynamic between the two performers and the director. Although, Engin gets the credit for music, Donya for acting and Vahdat for writing and directing, the matter of fact is that this production has been created by three of them in real time, through months of rehearsals and exercises.
