A classical musical arts camp where children will learn skills in choral music and music theory. MUSICAL ARTS CAMPDATES: June 7–11, 2021 TIME: 1–4 p.m. ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS: Children in grades one through eight as of the 2020/2021 school year COST: $40. Covers camp shirt, snacks, supplies, and literature. DAILY SCHEDULE: 12:45 p.m. — Check-in 1:00 p.m. — Opening Assembly 1:30 p.m. — Choral and Music Theory Sessions 2:15 p.m. — Recreation & Snacks 3:00 p.m. — Choral and Music Theory Sessions 3:45 p.m. — Closing Assembly 4:00 p.m. — Dismissal 7:00 p.m. — Concert (Friday only) CAMP DESCRIPTION: Our goal is to foster and develop classical music education in children and youth, a skill and knowledge set that they will be thankful for into adulthood. Adults often say they wish they had persevered in learning music as a child. Rarely, if ever, do they express regret for doing so. Music Theory: We will offer four levels of music theory (Levels 1 & 2 for Grades 1–4 and Levels 1 & 2 for Grades 5–8). Music theory is essentially the elements that construct a piece of music (music notation, rhythm, harmony, etc.).Choral Ensembles: We will offer two choirs (Grades 1–4 and Grades 5–8). The choral literature will represent a variety of styles and languages primarily in the Classical, Sacred genre.Concert: The Friday evening concert will be a culmination and celebration for our families and friends, demonstrating all that we have learned throughout the week.LEADERS: Camp Director and Choral Instructor — Laramie Minga Laramie has a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Voice concentration and a Master of Music in Church Music, Conducting concentration. He is currently writing his dissertation as a Ph.D. candidate in Church Music & Worship at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is currently the Pastor for Worship and Discipleship at Woodlawn Baptist Church and has been serving in full-time local church music ministry since 2002. Logistical Director and Recreation — Lyn Bailey Lyn has a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education majoring in mathematics education and minoring in physical education and a Master of Arts in School Counseling and Guidance. Lyn has taught in middle schools and high schools in Alabama and Louisiana. She currently serves on staff at Woodlawn Baptist Church as their Children’s Minister and has been in this position for the past five years. Theory Level 1 Instructor — Darlene Doss Darlene has a Bachelor of Music Education, Voice concentration. She has taught in a variety of school, church, and international settings since 1980. She was a licensed and certified Kindermusik Instructor for over 16 years and is currently a music ministry volunteer at Woodlawn Baptist Church. Theory Level 2 Instructor — Randy Trahan Randy has been involved in church music his entire life, participating in choirs and vocal ensembles, singing solos, and playing instruments (guitars and keyboards). From 2008-2016 he served as the music coordinator for St. Matthew the Apostle Orthodox Church and for the past seven years as the director of the children's choir (grades 1-6) at Woodlawn Baptist Church. Through the years he has written a number of arrangements and even a few original compositions for congregational singing, choir, piano, and worship band. Accompanist — Mae Bearry Mae has a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Southeastern Louisiana University. She has been a church accompanist for 45 years (currently serving at Woodlawn Baptist Church) and has accompanied concert choirs and community chorales in both Hammond and Hattiesburg. Her experience also includes being a repetiteur for Southeastern’s Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts and the Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera. *All of our camp staff have gone through our Woodlawn Baptist Church five-part safety system, which includes 1) awareness training, 2) the skillful screening process, 3) reviewing of our safety policies and procedures, 4) passing a background check, and 5) continuing to be actively monitored when supervising children.
