NORTHPORT, NY — Munchkin and Ollie, a pair of cats who have had it rough, are the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cats of the Week. Munchkin is a 3-to-4-year-old female black cat who was abandoned by the only family she ever knew when they welcomed a new baby. Munchkin, suddenly cast aside, tried to survive outside and was seen begging at neighbors' doors asking to be let in from the cold, according to Lora Wild, a volunteer at the rescue. "One kind neighbor allowed her to live in his car and finally reached out to us for some help," Wild said. "We fostered Munchkin with so much patience and love, and she has truly come a long way." Munchkin is in one of the rescue's habitats, and Wild said the organization hopes she will catch someone's eye — someone willing to give her a chance. "Munchkin understandably is guarded and needs patience," Wild said. "She is super vocal and enjoys being brushed, and when you pet her, [she] will purr loudly. She loves to play." She is looking for a home that will allow her to be herself and never toss her out again. Ollie, a 5-year-old male orange tabby, was found begging for scraps in the neighborhood he lived in his whole life after his family moved and left him behind. "He is grateful to be safe and warm with our rescue and was fostered in a home with cats and dogs and gets along with both!" Wild wrote. "He is now in one of our habitats at Doggie Dons in Northport, looking out from the cage, and patiently waiting for someone to notice him and give him a chance." Ollie has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, Wild said. "This sounds worse than it is," she said. "Ollie needs just one drop of medicine in his food once a day. With regular yearly vet visits, Ollie can live a very normal life. He is sweet and patient and kind. He just wants to relax on a comfy couch in the same room as you, or watch the birds fly by outside. Although cautious of being picked up, he loves to be pet, will headbutt, and sit right by your side. He needs a home that will give him stability and never leave him behind again." Both cats have all their shots, while Munchkin is spayed and Ollie is neutered. They are both litter box-trained, micro-chipped and FELV/FIV negative.
