CT Coronavirus Hospitalizations, Infections Trend Higher

CONNECTICUT — The two primary metrics the state uses to gauge its coronavirus mitigation strategy are both up trending the wrong way in the most recent round of data releases from the Department of Public Health. Four hundred three patients are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Connecticut, up 14 beds from the previous day's reckoning. Just as concerning was the daily coronavirus positivity rate, which has also been trending higher. Out of 20,009 tests administered, 898 came back positive, yielding a 4.49 percent rate. Is there a single reason for the poor trend lines? Probably not, and if there is, DPH is giving no indication. The state has lifted all capacity restrictions on most businesses, but is also one of the leaders in per capita vaccinations. The U.K. variant is more contagious than the main strain and now represents more than a third of the cases in the state, but the vaccine remains effective against it. The latest strain of the virus to be found in Connecticut, the New York variant, may be more resistant, but there are only 44 cases, newly discovered. There were four more COVID-19-associated deaths reported, bringing the state toll to 7,845 since the start of the pandemic.
