Description
Press release from the City of Ames:
March 23, 2021
"As neighbors, families, friends, and community, we condemn the act of hatred, violence, racism, bigotry, and xenophobia we saw in Atlanta and continue to see in cities across America. These deliberate, premeditated acts are vile and reprehensible. Attacks on the Asian and Asian-American community are attacks on the very ideal of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The City of Ames remains resolutely committed to maintaining and strengthening our inclusive and welcoming city. We express our unequivocal support of our Asian and Asian-American community members.
Although we are actively engaged in a variety of collaborative improvements to our community such as hosting the Ames Community Institute, appointing and empowering a diverse City of Ames Human Relations Commission, actualizing recommendations contained in the Policing in Ames: A Path Forward report, and co-hosting the annual Symposium for Building Inclusive Workplaces, in times like this we are reminded just how much work lies ahead of us. We will continue our endeavors because everyone who calls Ames home deserves no less than our most sincere and concerted efforts.
I call upon all Ames residents to join in a collective resolve to make our community safe and welcoming to everyone."
John A. Haila, Mayor City of Ames
