i can't tell you how many backpacking trips I have done, from San Diego to Seattle, From Montana to Utah, and never felt the need to carry an AR because of, grizzly bears, wolves, mountain lions, coyotes, and or any other forms of wildlife. Bear bells and a warning shot from a.357 do the job rather well.
