Oakland Museum of California Req No 2021-1360 Category Facilities Type Regular Full-Time Closing Date Schedule Targeted Job Start Date 5/1/2021 Overview The Groundskeeper is responsible for the upkeep and appearance of the seven acre, multi-level campus. The position performs semi-skilled work in the maintenance, care, and modification of Museum grounds and landscapes which includes the operation of electrically-powered and gasoline-powered groundskeeping equipment and machines, and the use of small hand and power tools or equipment in planting, cultivating, and trimming grounds and landscaping. The position also performs maintenance and minor repairs on groundskeeping equipment and tools. May perform repairs on irrigation lines and valves, help identify long-term maintenance needs and assist with major renovation initiatives. POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Plant, transplant, water, prune, and weed planter bedsInstall landscape designs (trees, shrubs, flowers) in accordance with drawings and sketches to design specificationsUse shears, saws, loppers, and other hand and power tools to prune and shape trees, shrubs, and other plants for desirable appearance and vigorous healthIrrigate, mow, rake, and edge lawnOperate pressure washer to clean concrete surfacesRecognize disease and insect problems of woody and herbaceous plants and perform pest control operationsApply fertilizers and other chemicals while adhering to all OSHA and SDS safety requirements; maintain application recordsMove, store, and maintain inventory of facility tools, supplies, equipment, and furnitureMove pooled water to prevent flooding and alleviate slip hazardsWork with Security Manager and Engineers to maintain and upgrade lighting and/or security systemsParticipate in waste management, recycling, and composting programsOperate motor vehicles to transport materials and equipmentPerform repairs on irrigation, drainage, and other systems as instructedWork with Green Team to develop and implement environmentally sustainable practices throughout the facilityFollow established policies and procedures while working collaboratively with colleagues as part of a professional and diverse teamAssist with implementation and compliance of OSHA requirements; promote continuous improvement of workplace safetyProvide a welcoming environment to visitorsOther job-related duties as assigned Qualifications EXPERIENCE Ability to display and encourage visitor and internal customer service, take and share responsibility and treat others with respect1-2 years related experienceKnowledge of garden management techniques such as soil cultivation, propagation, digging, forking, mulching, weeding, edging, pruning, bed preparation, and plantingKnowledge of planting irrigationKnowledge of safety protocolsKnowledge of basic plant identification; California natives a plusKnowledge of basic pest controlAbility to read and interpret drawings and blueprintsFirst aid/CPR training preferred WORK ENVIRONMENT The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
