Press release from the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce : Ryan Melhorn 03/22/2021 Students in grades 6-12 participated in the Carroll County History Day competition from March 6 through 12, 2021. This is part of National History Day, a nationwide program held annually that involves more than half a million students. The program provides an excellent opportunity to develop primary and secondary research skills.   Students choose a historical topic related to that year's specific theme, which is "Communication in History: The Key to Understanding." Students have the chance to explore how the methods and modes of communication have changed over time, and how they have shaped the present. They develop a thesis and a thorough analysis of sources and draw conclusions about the significance of their selected topic. Presentations may take the form of a paper, exhibit, performance, documentary, or website.   Projects in the local competition were judged by teachers, librarians, and Carroll County officials. The top 2 winners in each category may enter their project in the Maryland History Day competition to be held in May.   1st PLACE Junior Paper: Amelia Neuheisel, Shiloh Middle School Overnight Communication: Paul Revere's Midnight Ride Junior Individual Website: Natalie Castonguay, West Middle School Union Mills Homestead Rural Free Delivery Junior Group Website Ethan Lin and Aryan Shrestha, West Middle School The Lonnie Zamora Incident Junior Group Exhibit Emily and Benjamin Wernick, Northwest Middle School A Mistake That Ended in 23,000 Casualties Junior Individual Documentary Zachary Rice, Shiloh Middle School A Blitz of Communication Junior Group Documentary Isla Hadden, Emma Maben, and Olivia Watts, North Carroll Middle School History of Morse Code Senior Paper Joey Rumbaugh, Manchester Valley High School Navajo Code Talkers Senior Individual Documentary Sumaiya Rahaman, Westminster High School Tiananmen Square Massacre: Censorship of Communications   2nd PLACE Junior Individual Website Sanjiv Ramsingh, Mt.
