Press release from the New Orleans Fire Department: March 19, 2021 On Friday, March 19, 2021 at 5:13 pm, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 911 call reporting a house on fire located at 8540 Bill Street. The first up responding fire crews arrived at 8540-8542 Bill Street at 5:19 pm to find a one story, brick family double on fire with heavy fire and smoke coming from the front of 8542. A Second Alarm was immediately struck at 5:20 pm. All residents escaped the fire before firefighters arrived on the scene. The fire started at 8542 in a rear bedroom from an overloaded electrical outlet and quickly spread to several rooms in the home. Four adults and five children lived at 8542 and their home was totally destroyed. Two adults and one child lived at 8540, firefighters rescued a puppy, a snake and two bearded dragons uninjured, there was smoke and water damage to this home. One adult lived alone at 8550 and the rear of the exterior of the home sustained fire, smoke and water damage. Three adults and three children lived at 8552, the home sustained minor smoke and water damage. No injuries were reported. The fire was placed under control at 5:54 pm. The American Red Cross, the New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS), the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) and Entergy responded to assist the NOFD with this incident. Sixteen NOFD units carrying forty-four Fire Operations personnel were used in the mitigation of this incident.
