ELMHURST, IL — A man posing as a residential plumber was allowed into an Elmhurst house and stole valuables, police said Monday. The incident was reported as happening about 2 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of North Indiana Street. According to a news release, the man asked to check the resident's faucets inside her home. The resident let the man in, and he asked her to turn on the bathroom faucet, police said. While out of sight, police said, the man entered the victim's bedroom and stole the valuables. The man was seen leaving the neighborhood in a red SUV and may have been with an accomplice, according to the news release. The man was described as white or Hispanic with a mustache. Ruse burglars often distract or occupy residents in another part of the house while stealing valuables, police said. Home repair professionals such as plumbers and electricians will not come to people's homes to perform work without making appointments, police said. Anyone with information about the ruse burglary is asked to call the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050.
