WEST ISLIP, NY — One year after schools closed down due to the coronavirus cases, some are starting to plan a return to full-time in-person learning. However, the West Islip School District had to postpone a return to classrooms for some students due to newly reported cases. The district planned to have some high school students return starting on Monday, however in a letter to the community, Superintendent Bernadette Burns announced that decision will be delayed after six new positive COVID-19 cases were reported. Currently, 135 students are in quarantine. As a result, the 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will continue with hybrid learning while the 12th grade students will continue with full-time in-person schooling. According to the New York State COVID-19 school report card, as of Friday West Islip High School has the highest number of positive cases with a total of 159 reported among students and staff members. Manetuck Elementary School has the second highest number of positive cases at 38.
