INDIANAPOLIS — The Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team (25-6) defeated the No. 9 seed Maryland Terrapins 96-77 Monday night to advance to the program's first Sweet 16 in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament since 2004. Sophomore guard Jahvon Quinerly recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists, while senior guard John Petty Jr. was electric from behind the arch against Maryland on his way to a 20-point night. Sophomore Jaden Shackelford led the team in scoring, notching 21 in the second-round game. From 3-point range, the Tide made 16 on the evening, hitting an eye-popping 48.5% of its long-range shots against the Terrapins. Led by second-year coach Nate Oats, this Sweet 16 appearance will be Alabama's ninth time to make it this far in the big dance, advancing to the Elite 8 only once in 2004.
