Press release from the University of Alabama: Bryant Welbourne, UA Strategic Communications, [email protected] March 23rd, 2021 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama's Moundville Archaeological Park will host the virtual Ancient Art and Technology Weekend March 26-27, and the annual Birdfest April 9-10, which will include in-person and virtual components. The Ancient Art and Technologies Weekend will feature craft demonstrations, lectures and stories at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day on the Moundville Archaeological Park Facebook page and UA Museums YouTube page. Activity packets for the Ancient Art and Technologies Weekend are available at the Jones Archaeological Museum located in the Park. These packets include educational crafting activities that discuss the importance of rock art and its symbolism, as well as the technique of flintknapping. The annual Birdfest will include an in-person bird walk with local expert Dwight Lammon at 9 a.m. each day, followed by a craft activity or lecture on the UA Museums YouTube page at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. "We are so happy that the Alabama Audubon will be with us to talk about birding in the Black Belt this year," said Lindsey Gordon, education and outreach coordinator with Moundville Archaeological Park. "We are also thrilled to have the continued support of the West Alabama Birding Trail Committee and Alabama Wildlife Center, which are doing very vital work to conserve Alabama's wildlife." The bird walk at the park will include information on wildlife conservation, bird watching checklists, birdhouse plans and much more. Activity packets will be available at Jones Archaeological Museum and include color sheets filled with different types of birds for kids and adults. The packets will also include supplies for patrons to take home and make their own eagle puppets and pinecone birdfeeders. There is no extra cost for Birdfest after paying admission to the park. Admission is $6 for students ages 6 and older, $7 for seniors and $8 for adults. Registration for the bird walk is required and patrons must comply with all social distance guidelines and regulations. Patrons can register for the bird walk online. Registration is limited.
