SUMMARY Measures, observes and evaluates critical process variables and outcomes. Advises the Foundry supervisor staff and Quality Assurance personnel of conditions which might impact product quality. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. • Collects molten metal iron samples (2600-2700 degrees) from molds and furnaces. • Conducts routine microscopic examinations of metals and alloys to determine their crystal structure, porosity, homogeneity, nodularity, and other characteristics. Records results of observations in logs as directed. • Evaluates finished products using various instruments, gauges, or other equipment to ensure compliance to required specifications. • Examines metal and alloy samples with spectrometer to determine chemical properties and records results in logs as directed. • Machines standard test bars to prescribe dimensions and performs mechanical tests to determine tensile strength, elongation, and other properties. Records results of observations in logs as directed. • Collects samples of sand mixes and compresses sand into sample piece. • Determines properties of sand samples such as moisture content, permeability, compression and shear strength, clay content, and sand grain size and distribution. Performs similar tests on ladle lining refractories. • Tests quality of incoming materials such as sands, resins, clays, binders, and miscellaneous material including scrap steel to determine fitness for use. Records results of observations in logs as directed. • Performs routine maintenance of inspection instruments and equipment. • Maintains inventory of laboratory consumable supplies and recommends purchases or replenishment to supervisor. • Prepares and forwards certification to sales office or Quality personnel as requested. • Practices safe work habits, maintains workplace in good order, and wears issued personal protective equipment at all times in the workplace. • Other duties may be assigned. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee frequently is required to climb 6-8 steps 25-30 times each day. The employee is occasionally required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, and vibration. The noise level in the work environmental is usually very loud.
