In Vehicle Maintenance there is no such thing as a normal day. The position of transportation repair technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair and diagnosis of the district fleet of buses and district vehicles. Providing technician services to the Bend-La Pine Schools is a career with meaning. Bend La Pine Schools is the 5th largest school district in Oregon serving over 17,000 students. Bend La Pine Schools transportation is responsible for transporting students safely to and from schools and activities throughout the region. We welcome you to join our team! Nature and Duties of the Job Performs visual and diagnostic inspections of equipment in the field or in the shop to determine safety status or to identify potential causes of equipment malfunction. Drives, and operates vehicles, or uses diagnostic test equipment to identify problems and malfunctions. May be required to initiate an order for parts including contacting vendors to determine availability of parts. Repairs or replaces equipment components such as engines, transmissions, power trains, differentials, and axles including gears, carburetors and fuel injector systems, electrical or electronic ignition and electrical generation and transmission systems, air compression systems and lines, engine cooling and air conditioning systems, suspension systems, mechanical braking systems, and air and hydraulic braking systems; cleans tools and equipment; keeps work area clean and orderly. Applies safety procedures to all facets of work. Inspects buses to note deficiencies as required by State law. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge Skills and Abilities Preferred Skillfully use tools and operate diagnostic and power equipment employed in the repair and adjustment of engines and components. Ability to locate and repair defects in motor equipment. Ability to follow oral and written directions. Repair automotive equipment and auxiliary electrical, electronic, mechanical, or structural components. Skill or ability to learn how to perform diagnostic or mechanical repair work independently without direct supervision in the shop or in the field. Ability to learn State repair and maintenance requirements for school buses. Maintain a high level of commitment to completion of all tasks. Education and Training Must have a high school diploma. Must be able to meet industry journeyman standards for repair and diagnosis within two years after date of employment. Must provide a set of standard technician’s tools. Must obtain Oregon Dept of Education School Bus Inspector Certification within 6 months of employment. Motor Vehicle Requirements Required to hold a valid Oregon Class B Commercial Driver's License issued by the Oregon State Department of Motor Vehicles and a School Bus Driver's Certificate. Possess the appropriate Oregon Driver's License and maintain an insurable status for automobile and liability coverage. Employees working in the transportation shop performing vehicle repair duties are provided a variety of equipment to assist in the lifting and maneuvering of parts and materials. Items exceeding 50 pounds in weight should be lifted or moved utilizing a team lift arrangement or tools provided specifically to move the equipment. Examples include hydraulic lifts, wheeled carts, and tire and brake drum dollies.
