Douglas County is seeking applicants to fill positions within our Buildings and Grounds department. Submit applications online via website: Application deadline: April 4th, 2021 The Custodial/Maintenance Assistant is responsible for upkeep, cleaning and maintenance of the County Courthouse, Government Center, Jail and other buildings and premises maintained by the Department. S/he may serve as back-up or perform Building Maintenance Technician duties under the direct supervision of a Building Maintenance Technician or the General Services Director. This job class differs from the Building Maintenance Technician job class in that the Custodial/Maintenance Assistant is not expected to independently perform building maintenance work. The standard work week is Monday through Friday; the position needs to be available for after hours and weekend work for emergency situations such as rain, snow and ice. Essential Duties: -Performs general cleaning in all departments in County facilities, e.g. dust, empty trash cans, clean windows, shampoo carpets, wax floors, clean bathrooms and lunchroom, clean light fixtures, sweep, mop, scrub and vacuum hallways, stairs, office spaces and other work areas. -Replenish supplies in restroom and kitchen areas. -Maintain the building by performing minor and routine painting, and other related maintenance activities. -May move furniture and assemble shelving units. -Maintain grounds by performing snow removal, lawn mowing, and shrubbery trimming. Cultivate general landscape. -Inform the Building Maintenance Lead Technician of problem areas that need repair or replacement of parts. -Maintain related records; recommend budget items required for proper maintenance. -Load and unload supplies from vehicles. -Utilize and monitor various temporary or program workers in performing general duties (e.g. CWEP, CEP, Restitution workers) -Assist Building Maintenance Technicians when requested. -May serve as back-up when department is short-handed, or at the direction of the General Services Director. -Deliver supplies to various user departments; transport small equipment between departments; set up/arrange tables, chairs and other equipment in conference rooms or county board chambers for meetings. -Punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including but not limited to attendance standards and deadlines, beginning and ending assignments on time and scheduled work breaks where applicable. -Adapt with minimal or no advanced notice to changes in how business is conducted and how work is accomplished -Perform other duties related to the job as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. High School Diploma or GED required; 3-5 years of related experience preferred. Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Must possess a valid State of Wisconsin driver's license or one from another state which will allow the legal operation of a motor vehicle on Wisconsin roads. Knowledge Required Working knowledge of basic techniques and procedures used in general cleaning, grounds and building systems; working knowledge of occupational safety rules and practice; working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials for facility maintenance and repair. Abilities Required Skillfully use the tools, equipment and materials utilized in the facility. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, superiors, subordinates and the general public. Maintain accurate records and prepare and submit oral and written records. Successfully complete a background investigation. Read or comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Write simple correspondence. Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization(s). Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Supplemental Information: Working Conditions Ability to work in and have exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including temperature extremes, as well as moderate noise levels from mechanical/electrical tools and equipment, varied air-quality and exposure to construction materials and fumes. Hazards include limited exposure to toxic building/painting materials. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing. The individual must frequently and safely lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds and on occasion safely lift 50-100 pounds. The ideal candidate will be required to pass a post job offer physical examination for the occupational requirements of the job class. Certifications/Licensure As deemed necessary by the Emergency Management/ General Services Director. Commute Requirement Must establish and maintain a 45-minute commute distance from the employee's assigned work site. Proximity to work site is a condition of employment. Any individual hired shall have six (6) months to establish and maintain commute requirements. Testing Requirement Structured interview, references, pre-employment physical evaluation; background investigation.
