Visit filmsite The Legacy Sessions directed by William D. Ashton (USA/2020/36mins) Director and Cast Attending In the strenuous world of children’s party entertainment, an overly positive “princess” must win over a writer who is doing a story on female role models. William “David” Ashton is a writer and director based in Virginia. He cut his filmmaking teeth making Mysterious Prison in 2013, a zero budget feature, and his since directed numerous short films and music videos. His newest project, The Legacy Sessions, is his most personal film to date. Director Statement The Legacy Sessions is a film about grief, aging, unlikely friendship, and what it truly means to be “punk.” I was fortunate enough to have close relationships with both of my grandmothers, and I wanted to tell a story that paid tribute to their legacy and influence on my life. For years I’ve been drawn to cross-generational stories, and also to retirement communities as a setting. It’s a world on to its own, and one we don’t often see in the movies. In 2019, my Mom put together the real life “Legacy Sessions” in Virginia Beach. When she told me about this special event that connected acting students with retirees, I knew immediately it was the backdrop I had been looking for. We shot the film at the same high school and retirement community involved with the real event, and all the supporting roles were cast with real life students and retirees from those locations.
