The Custodian I is a classified position working under the direction of the Head of Maintenance and Operations, under the general supervision of the Superintendent or designee. This position keeps an assigned area of a building or grounds clean, sanitary and in safe condition, may work alone outside of the normal school day, and exercises judgment as appropriate. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Cleaning: • Sweep, dust, scrub and mop floors; refinish, seal and wax floors of various types • Perform general cleaning of classrooms including trash cans in buildings • Dust and/or wash walls, woodwork, light fixtures, windows, blinds, furniture and other school equipment • Vacuum and shampoo carpets • Resolve any unsafe or unsanitary conditions, including bio-hazards • May supervise student work programs Security: • Respond to radio calls • Open and secure buildings and facilities as appropriate • Member of disaster planning committee Events: • Assist in set-up and take-down activities for events Grounds: • Assist in upkeep of campus including clean-up, hauling trash, grass cutting, planting, weeding and pruning • Load trucks, haul trash • Put up barriers around newly planted areas and hazardous areas • Remove and cut up trees Maintenance: • Replace lamps and fuses • Operate heating systems • Change HVAC filters • Move furniture and perform minor repairs and adjustments of furniture and equipment • Perform minor painting and carpentry duties • Identify what must be purchased and report to supervisor • May perform work associated with work requests • Responsible for periodic safety inspections and member of disaster planning committee • Set clocks for outside lighting and time changes • Power wash buildings and walkways Employment Standards: Training and Experience – One year experience in custodial work is desirable. Knowledge of cleaning techniques, procedures and materials; safe work practices. Abilities – Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment; work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work; follow oral and written instructions; work independently. Minimum Requirements: Physical Effort/Working Environment - Indoor and outdoor work environment during all seasons. Perform strenuous work, lift and carry up to 60 pounds, use of cleaning solvents/disinfectants common to custodial maintenance. Licenses and Certificates – A valid Class 3 California driver’s license and evidence of appropriate automobile insurance based on DMV regulations may be required. Education – Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read, write, and verbally communicate at the level required to perform the duties of the job safely and successfully.
