Andover Fire Puts Out Blaze In House With No Working Smoke Alarms

ANDOVER, MA — Andover Fire Rescue put out a fire in a Sunset Rock Road house Monday, the department said. The home had no working smoke alarms, Chief Michael Mansfield said. A neighbor saw smoke coming from the home and alerted the residents. Two Andover firefighters were hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening. There were no injuries to residents. Firefighters were dispatched to 14 Sunset Rock Road at 10:31 a.m. and put it out within an hour, Mansfield said. Smoke and fire were showing from the roof of the single-family home. Tewksbury and Lawrence firefighters helped fight the fire. "Today's fire is a clear example of why it's critical to have working smoke alarms throughout your home so that you can be alerted to danger as soon as possible," Mansfield said. "It's extremely fortunate that a neighbor spotted the smoke and warned the residents inside. If this fire had occurred overnight, with nobody around to see the danger and no smoke alarms to alert people inside the home, then the outcome could have been tragic." Haverhill, Lawrence, North Reading and Methuen provided station coverage in Andover during the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Andover Fire Rescue estimated the cost of the damage to the home to be roughly $400,000. This story has been updated.
