LONG BEACH, NY — Two people, including a New York City police officer, were arrested Sunday morning after police said they fired a gun into the ocean.
According to Long Beach police, officers responded to Ocean Beach Park and Franklin Boulevard around 6:50 a.m. for a report of shots fired. When they arrived, they saw four people walking off the beach.
The officers stopped them, and police said Officer David Afanador, 39, of Long Beach, had a loaded handgun and three high-capacity magazines.
Police said Afanador was firing the gun into the ocean. He then passed the gun to Jennifer Sonnick, 36, of Long Beach, and she too fired shots into the ocean, police said. They were both arrested.
Afanador is a New York City police officer, but is on restricted assignment and is not authorized to possess or carry firearms, police said.
Afanador is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, prohibited use of a weapon and possession of alcohol at Ocean Beach park.
Sonnick was charged with second-degree criminal use of a weapon and prohibited use of a weapon.
They are both scheduled to be arraigned in Long Beach City Court on Monday.
