NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Fire alarms are expected to resound throughout Nassau County at 7 p.m. on Monday, as local fire departments signal the end of a COVID-19 memorial service organized by lawmakers from the Nassau County Legislature in Mineola. The county's 71 fire departments were asked over the weekend to sound their "audible alerts" from their home bases by Frank DeBobes, chairman of the Nassau County Fire Commission, according to Port Washington Fire Department Assistant Chief Brian Waterson. It is not clear how many of the county's fire departments will be participating. The Legislature's memorial will both "honor those who lost their lives to COVID-19, and recall the heroic actions of those healthcare workers, first responders, and other essential workers on the front lines fighting the pandemic," officials said in a news release. The memorial, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will be held on the front steps of the Theodore Roosevelt Legislative Building. In addition to members of the legislature, County Executive Laura Curran, Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, and Health Commissioner Dr. Larry Eisenstein are also expected to attend. Members of the clergy and union leaders are also expected to attend. The memorial will be closed to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions.
