NORWALK, CT — Norwalk Public Schools issued a statement Monday condemning recent acts of violence and verbal abuse against Asians and women, and is providing counselors and social workers to help students and staffers who may need help dealing with the events. "The Board of Education and Norwalk Public Schools offer our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the victims in last week's senseless violence in Georgia," officials wrote on Facebook. "Amid fears that this was a hate crime targeting Asians and women, we stand in solidarity with the diverse members of our Norwalk community, and all those who strongly condemn racial violence, harassment and discrimination of any type. There is no room for such behavior in Norwalk or anywhere in our country." Over the weekend, rallies were held throughout the nation condemning last week's killing of eight people in Georgia, six of whom were Asian American. Before the recent wave of attacks on Asian Americans, the Norwalk district already was in the midst of rooting out "weaknesses and bias" within the system as it related to racism and other biases in the wake of the death of George Floyd. "To ensure that NPS students are ready to be responsible citizens in a global society, we will also continue to engage students in age-appropriate work as a vehicle to discuss race and racism," officials wrote.
