Description
DOYLESTOWN, PA — Fonthill Castle was recently ranked among the 12 best castles in the country by MarthaStewart.com.
Built in 1912, the six-story historic structure in Doylestown Township was the home of archaeologist Henry Chapman Mercer. It also served as a showplace for Mercer's famous Moravian tiles that were produced during the American Arts & Crafts Movement.
The castle, which attracts roughly 30,000 visitors each year, features 44 rooms, over 200 windows and 18 fireplaces. It incorporates architectural styles from the Medieval, Gothic and Byzantine periods.
Before his passing in 1930, Mercer dedicated his castle as a museum of decorative tiles and prints and gave rights to the building to Laura and Frank Swain, who were his housekeeper and her husband. Since then, the castle has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
