ELMHURST, IL — As with other towns in the area, Elmhurst saw a higher coronavirus rate increase in the last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, the city experienced 91 new cases in the last week, or a 2.4 percent hike. The increase was 1 percent the week before. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. As of Sunday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst increased by one in the last week, to 61. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.6 percent. As of Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was caring for 13 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. That is down by one from the previous week. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 174 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is the same as a week ago. Since March, 1,616 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
