For the final week of the year-long Medfield Historical Minutes, each of the days will represent an important event in Medfield history that had a major and "game changing" impact on the town. A Medfield Historical Minute... This is the FINAL "Medfield Historical Minute" brought to you by town historian, Richard DeSorgher. Although the Coronavirus is still part of our daily lives, there is hope on the horizon that we will not be isolated too much longer as vaccinations are now taking place. Medfield Historical Minutes were Richard's way of "giving you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation" by sharing his knowledge of Medfield history. A huge thank you to Richard for his time and dedication to sharing the history of Medfield with our community for one full year. "The year 2014 certainly will be remembered as the year that the former Medfield State Hospital property turned from state control to being under the control of the Town of Medfield. The transfer of ownership of approximately 127 acres of the former hospital from the state to the town took place on December 2, 2014 when the selectmen signed the Land Disposition Agreement. Medfield earlier, by a unanimous vote of Town Meeting and by a 1,277 to 104 approval vote at the ballot, would now decide the fate of the property, not the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The purchase includes the approximately 87 acres "core campus" and the 40 acre "Sledding Hill" area. Some 35 buildings were contained in the core campus. Numerous study and planning committees will be next to present a plan, that whatever is decided, will greatly impact the town for generations to come."
