Description

Amy Somary, Neighbor The election is April 6th for local races in Arlington Heights, including school board races, village trustees and the Arlington Heights Memorial Library board. Early voting starts at the Village Hall on Monday, March 22. I'm running for the two-year position on the AHML Board. I’ve lived in Arlington Heights with my husband for 27 years. We chose Arlington Heights to raise our four sons because of the outstanding community – which definitely includes the Arlington Heights Memorial Library. I see the library as a pillar of town. It’s one of few places that offers something for each stage of your life. From new parents, to newly retired, new immigrants to new entrepreneurs, the library has something for everyone. As Arlington Heights continues to evolve, I want to make sure our library stays relevant to ALL residents… AND that people know the great things it offers. We support the library with substantial property taxes, I will make certain the library continues to use that money wisely and that people are aware of the many library services. Libraries are full of a lot more than books! What would I bring to the board? I graduated from Northwestern with a journalism degree and spent most of my career as a public relations executive at Edelman in Chicago, where I managed many national accounts including the famous Butterball Turkey Talk-Line. For the past two decades I’ve volunteered extensively and served in many leadership positions at my parish and my sons’ schools – Our Lady of the Wayside and Hersey. I served on my Northwestern Reunion steering committee and as an election judge last fall. For the past nine years, I’ve worked in preschool and most recently as an elementary substitute teacher. I see first-hand how educators and parents use the library. I understand AHML has a comprehensive strategic plan with specific goals. I will collaborate with the staff,- and my fellow board members, to help the library meet its objectives. I especially hope to collaborate with other groups in Arlington Heights like the park district, business owners and schools. My extensive background in public relations, and having served on several Wayside boards, (including the PTA, Boosters and School Board) will be helpful as the library opens its new makerspace this summer. What an awesome project! We need to make sure everyone knows about it!We all pay for the library through higher rent or property taxes. I will watch how dollars are spent. And, I will help the library remain focused on the PEOPLE of Arlington Heights by fostering meaningful connections across our diverse community. Perhaps most importantly, I love Arlington Heights! We have a five-star library for a reason. The library doesn’t rest on its laurels .It continually pushes itself to further success. I want to help ensure the library's continued excellence. I humbly ask for your vote on April 6th. For more information on me, please check out my Facebook page - Amy Somary for Library Board – or contact me directly at [email protected]
