Once I was asked to play for 1 hour at a seasonal heritage cultural festa. They said it was volunteer and were looking for a band to play the music of that culture. I said I would do it with my quartet for $400.00. The head gal told me they had Doctors and Lawyers volunteering their time at the tables the booths and the bar, as well as the ticket booth. I ask her how many doctors were volunteering their brain surgeries or Lawyers taking pro bono clients. She said that's ridiculous, NONE she shouted. I said well, you made my point. I too am a professional and like them, I don't give my talent away. But, I told her, with me, people will stay longer, they'll dance, they'll sing, and they'll interact with our show, plus they'll drink more, spend more and eat more, and next year they'll remember us and come back. I did that gig for four straight years. The club that sponsored that event disbanded.
Musicians are the only fools who will practice more years than a college professor, spend thousands of dollars on equipment, music and tools, travel great distances with high maintenance vehicles to work for...ZERO. You know what Zero gets you...ZERO!
