BRAINTREE, MA — Mayor Charles Kokoros has nominated Julian Melchionda for a spot on the Braintree Health Board, the same position held by her mother, Laurie Melchionda, who was shot and killed outside her home last year.
Laurie Melchionda, 58, was a longtime school nurse in the Braintree School District. She had also served on the Board of Health since October 2016. In June 2020, prosecutors said Laurie Melchionda was shot and killed by a former neighbor whodisguised himself as a UPS driver.
Town officials said Laurie Melchionda was a positive influence in the community, and Kokoros wrote a letter to the Town Council saying he believes her daughter will do the same.
"Juliana is well-educated having graduated from Clemson University and has extensive background working as a nurse in the health care system and is a perfect fit for the Board of Health," Kokoros told the council. "Juliana's professional career as a registered nurse has prepared her well to serve on the Board of Health, and it is most fitting that she continues the great work done by her mother while serving in this position. She is committed to serving the residents of Braintree, and I am certain she will prove to be an invaluable member of the Board."
The appointment needs the approval of the Town Council before it becomes official. The council is expected to vote on the nomination at its April 6 meeting.
