GARDEN CITY PARK, NY — A Brooklyn man was charged with assault after police say he injured an officer while trying to flee from an arrest. According to police, detectives saw a 2001 Nissan speeding near the Roosevelt Field Mall, located at 630 Old Country Road in Garden City Park, at 6:28 p.m. on Thursday. The detectives activated the lights on their car and pulled the car over. The detectives approached the car, and police say the driver —David Sang, 21, of Montauk Avenue, Brooklyn — became combative and reused to listen to their commands. A second police officer arrived on the scene to help. As their squad car pulled up, police say Sang fled the scene, striking the police car as he sped away. Sang was heading north on Ring Road when police say he lost control of his car and hit the median. He was then placed under arrest. The officer whose car was hit suffered head, back and neck pain. He was taken to a hospital, treated and released. Sang was also taken to a hospital for evaluation. Sang is charged with second-degree attempted assault, second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, second-degree criminal mischief and speeding. He is scheduled to be arraigned later today.
