Greenwich Public Schools Approaching 500 Confirmed COVID Cases

GREENWICH, CT — The number of positive coronavirus cases within Greenwich Public Schools since the start of the pandemic is now approaching 500 after school officials announced 11 new cases on Friday. The district, which reports new cases on Tuesday and Friday each week, has announced 19 cases this week alone, according to data on the district's website. The 495 total cases involve 12 different schools but of the 25 active cases, none of them are being connected to in-school cases with the majority (18) being tied to outside activities or family. The remaining seven cases are being linked to community exposure, district officials announced. Of the 470 cases that have been resolved, 17 were tied to in-school activity and the vast majority of the cases (385) involve students, the district reported. There have been 58 confirmed cases reported in March alone with the biggest amount (19) being reported on March 9. Greenwich elementary and middle school students have been learning in-person for five days a week all year while high school districts within the district had been attending in-person classes for two days a week with all students learning remotely on Wednesday. In her weekly update on Friday, Superintendent Toni Jones said that the district has been using a social distancing guideline of between 3-6 feet for student and staff since September. She said that the district will continue to follow those guidelines – as well as those involving face-coverings as the pandemic continues.
