Description

Clerical help and light caregiving for lively senior (berkeley north / hills) compensation: 17-$18/hour employment type: part-time I am a semi-retired activist archivist, and lively senior, fully mobile, vaccinated (2nd dose was on Feb 16th), who is looking for some paid clerical staff support and light caregiving in my home, 20-to-30 hours per week to start, mostly sorting/culling my paper and electronic mail. Naturally, you will need to be trustworthy, so I would love to know if you have been, for example, a house-sitter, or in another trusted position working for an individual and taking care of business as planned and as it comes up, whether at home or in an office (Please see details, below). The best-suited applicant would have the following qualities and skills: - CoViD-respectful (see Health and Safety section below to reassure you). - Resourceful and thoughtful problem solver. - Preferably familiar with Mac OS and Mac Mail. - Good speaking/writing skills, such as note-taking by typing, transcribing live conversations (we will provide guidance and training), and interpreting oral/written instructions. - Efficient in work style, with attention to detail. - Strong work ethic, shows up on time, works energetically. - Good listener; excellent memory. - Comfortable communicating by email and some phone. - Respectful of privacy. - Neat, clean, and tidy with their work. - Capacity to evolve into this position long-term, rather than planning on leaving the area, for example. - And, of course a sense of humor is a plus :) Sticky Wickets: 1. Must be smoke and scent free (no scented products. I will be happy to reimburse you for the first set, if you are willing and able to move over to the healthy products, if you are not already using them). 2. This will be a W-2 employee position, with wage payments reported to the IRS and FTB. 3. Need be able to climb stairs to the front door. 4. CoViD protection issues: If you have a car (not required), it is important that no others have been in the car for at least 3 hours before coming to my home due to possible CoViD contamination of clothing, hair, surfaces then touched by the driver, etc. On the way to my house, you would need to not go in and out of stores and others’ houses, for at least 3 hours before arriving at my house, in order to reduce possible CoViD contamination. FIRST project: The main task I need help with is going through past and current electronic and paper mail, mostly related to my activism and my non profit archive. I need someone to get me off hundreds of non- and for-profit lists and keep track in a spreadsheet (Google Sheets preferred or Excel, if they must), and to keep track of the donation receipts I have to track for taxes for the few non-profits to which I still give donations. Printing and scanning will be part of this. Some calling of organizations will also be needed, as well as finding emailed receipts from charitable organizations by the new IRS deadline of May 17, 2021. SECOND project, in the future : Due to years of fund-raising and activism, I receive a ridiculous amount of email each day. I am now ready to unsubscribe from most of the senders and need help with this. In the FURTHER future, we could possibly add hours, as well as tasks and responsibilities for more pay. This might be inventorying books, comparison shopping online for household, office or personal care products, cooking (only if you love cooking and don’t mind my limited diets), pick up my packages at You Send Me nearby, and other errands, or tasks that you would enjoy. Familiarity with Mac OS and Mac Mail would be a big help, because I have iMac desk tops. HEALTH and SAFETY: I have received my first CoViD vaccine and will receive my 2nd one on Feb 16. I have also had all the other vaccines -- pneumonia, whooping cough/etc, shingles and flu, if that is a comfort! :) You would work safely in the front office/living room, and have access to my kitchen and a separate bathroom. I would be a room away in the back office, and using my own bathroom, and we would operate in a CoViD-safe way. This means the usual: masked, distanced, with good fresh air ventilation, and wiping down surfaces before and after use. Also, the living room is quite large, over 25 feet long, with a screen door that leads to the even longer deck, which door can be left open for ventilation. There are 2 other doors that can be left open as needed for cross ventilation, as well as windows. I have 3 AirDoctor purifiers, and alcohol spray bottles everywhere. My house is also perfect for this CoViD safety effort, because I even have a more than 30-ft. deck which would allow us to talk safely in person, outdoors, if desired, while maintaining a safe distance. It’s also possible to work outside, weather permitting, as there is plenty of space on the deck, or the back patio out of the sun. We can even regularly communicate via email, phone and through my intercom system which was used for 40 plus years for a non profit headquartered here for 52 years, and, yes we can Zoom and share Google docs and sheets! I am relatively tech savvy, but have some remote support to help us both. They also work on other fun projects towards my retirement, and enjoying friends and family. ************************************************************************** LOCATION AND HOURS I live in Berkeley, near the Rose Garden and Live Oak Park, great places to walk to, walkable from most places in North and Downtown Berkeley, and a 12-minute bike ride from the N. Berkeley BART. Weekly hours are negotiated 2 weeks ahead according to what will best serve your needs and mine and others in our work circles. This includes daytime and/or evening hours, weekdays and/or weekends. Some work could be done remotely, at your home or outdoor cafe :) Please inform us what hours would work for you. The idea is that if you negotiate your hours carefully with your friends, family, teachers, and others, and then with us, then you will be happy here, and be able to stick to the set hours 2 weeks ahead so that work will flow smoothly for all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOW TO APPLY: If interested, this is a very important part of your interview process, to verify your ability to follow detailed written instructions: please paste in this ENTIRE ad into an email reply, with YOUR NAME and "Clerical Assistant" in the subject header. In the body of the email, first, answer the following questions: 1. Why would you be good for this job? 2. Why is this job good for you? 3. Who are 2 prior employers and 2 references? (include contact name, email, and phone) 4. What is your experience safeguarding highly-confidential information? Then, directly under each item in this ad (not just the four questions above, but EACH item in the ad, starting with Best Suited Applicant section), please provide *specific examples* of your skills and background in response to each item in the ad above, preceded by your initials and a colon. Feel free to attach any resumes or letters of recommendation as well, but not as a substitute for the necessary conversation which I request, because there are no HR people here. So much of our work communication will be by email, so this will be a great example. Thanks for your time and consideration!
