Description
PALM SPRINGS, CA — Contractors struck a gas line Friday in a Palm Springs neighborhood, prompting evacuations and the closure of a two-block stretch of roadway for several hours.
The gas leak was reported about 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of Sonora Road and South Indian Trail, according to SoCalGas.
Palm Springs police Lt. William Hutchinson said at least one gas line was severed by contractors working at a home in the area.
Two nearby homes were evacuated, although the residents had returned home by Friday afternoon, a SoCalGas spokesperson said.
No injuries were reported.
Crews stopped the gas leak by 9 a.m. and remained on scene to undergo permanent repairs, which have since been completed, the gas company said.
Palm Springs police reported a two-block stretch of Sonora, between South Calle Palo Fierro and South Camino Real, was quickly closed Friday morning.
One lane remained closed as of 3 p.m. It was unclear when that lane would reopen.
