Description
When the world first went into lockdown, the popular reading subscription platform Scribd saw a significant spike in reading activity as people suddenly found themselves with more free time. Now, over a year into the pandemic, consumers have settled into a "new normal" and their new routine includes spending more time reading.
In the U.S, readers spent over 24 million hours consuming content since the beginning of shelter-in-place mandates went into effect in March 2020. (If we could travel safely, that would be over 600,000 trips around the world!)
So what are people choosing to read? The most popular genres over the last year are Romance, Mystery, Thriller & Crime Fiction, Science Fiction & Fantasy and, Self-Improvement/Wellness. These genres closely align to U.S Netflix viewing trends, which showed that people may be escaping reality by binge-watching documentaries (mostly true crime) and romance. It also shows that people are using the extra time they have at home.
