Press release from the City of Carlsbad: March 18, 2021 Historic Preservation Commission Vacancies The City of Carlsbad is seeking residents interested in filling three scheduled vacancies on the City of Carlsbad Historic Preservation Commission to complete the term April 2021 to April 2025. The applications for these volunteer positions is available on the city's website or in the City Clerk's Office, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. Applications must be submitted to the City Clerk's Office by noon on Friday, April 9. The commission advises the City Council and Planning Commission in all matters relating to the identification, protection, retention and preservation of historic areas and sites within the city. Duties include, but are not limited to: Recommending the designation of historic landmarks or historic districts Maintaining an historic resources inventory Rendering advice and guidance, upon the request of the property owner or occupant, on the restoration, alteration, decoration, landscaping or maintenance of any historical area or site Conducting programs to educate local residents regarding historic places, structures or events The commission consists of five members nominated by any member of the Council and approved/confirmed by majority Council vote. Members normally serve four-year terms. All regular members must have knowledge of and a demonstrated interest in historic preservation and local history. Members of the commission have the following qualifications: Three members in Category 1A, each of whom has a different recognized expertise or interest in architecture, archaeology, history, biology, engineering or geology Two members in Category 2B, who have an interest in local history and serve at large from the community The three vacancies are for Category 1A. The Historic Preservation Commission meets at 4 p.m. the second Monday of the month via Zoom. When in-person meetings resume, this meeting will move to 6 p.m. at City Council Chambers at 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. Applicants must be Carlsbad residents and registered to vote in Carlsbad. Commission members are required to complete two hours of ethics training every two years and file a Fair Political Practices Commission Form 700 annual statement of economic interests. This statement, which is a public document, details a person's financial interests such as property ownership and business ownership.
