This training provides 3 Category I CE's for Ethics NOTE: Successful completion of this seminar will require attendance for the entire event as well as completion & submission of the evaluation form. Everyone has some degree of racial bias. What do we know about our biases and what remains hidden in our unconscious? How might our unconscious racial bias create ethical challenges in our clinical practices? Information and experiences that improve our understanding of racism and our ability to engage with ourselves and others on this difficult topic support our professional ethics. This workshop will cover the basics: a primer on our racialized U.S. history, intersectional biases including individual and structural considerations, and related ethical principles. With more awareness and less judgment, participants can reduce the possibility of their biases interfering with their connections with both clients and colleagues. Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1) Identify four ethical principles relevant to understanding bias in the clinical setting. 2) List 4 significant historical periods of racial discrimination in the U.S. and connect the impact of those eras to contemporary racial issues. 3) Define and differentiate individual and structural bias focusing on the micro and macro impacts of both. PRESENTERS: Cathy Roberts is a licensed professional counselor serving individuals and couples in MD, VA, and WV. Applying her counseling skills to anti-racism education, since 2016 Cathy has engaged with over a thousand participants in dozens of workshops and racial reconciliation circles locally and nationally.
