Thin set Country man from Charlestown, about 6 ft and scrubby beard hobbled out of a van with his (around) ten year old blonde daughter for a baby rat I was rehoming for 15 dollars. I got a pic of the daughter in her “rodent room” holding a large female rat as proof of their capabilities to care for one. Normally I rehome them in pairs but since she had a female already I went against my better judgement and agreed to give them only one. He had his daughter cooing over the baby and then asked if we were all set. When I gently reminded him of the rehoming fee, he became upset and insisted I agreed that the baby rat would be free and that he would not be paying anything. I disagreed and pulled out my phone to show him that neither of us ever said anything about her being free. He said he had absolutely nothing on him and he was set to go ‘fishin’ the next morning. The man sighed and turned to his daughter and said “well I guess you have to give it back, she’s making us pay” I instantly knew what he was playing at but seeing as there was a child in the mix, I didn’t want to embarrass her. I let them have the baby. After all, I don’t rescue for money, I want the rats to get good safe homes.. They sped out of the parking lot fast as lightening. I was so mad that night about getting conned but I swallowed my pride and messaged them, saying I hoped they are enjoying her and reminded them to send me a picture when she’s all settled. I get pictures and updates from everyone I give rats to. They said they will. That was about two weeks ago. Every other day I message the number asking for an update and begging for a reply. They haven’t replied. I wonder if they’ve done this before, if the girl is meant to manipulate people into getting things for free and I wonder about the fate of the poor baby I gave them. I feel awful about it. The rat would be about 2 months by now. She was a tiny Berkshire rat. I will send the number over email to anyone that asks for it to prevent this post getting flagged(🙄) I’m not sure of their intentions but keep your pets safe and save the number just in case.
