Description

Happy First Day of Spring-Saturday, March 20! Spring arrives at 5:37 A.M next Saturday. Another term to describe this day is the Vernal Equinox. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac's article "First Day of Spring: Celebrate the Spring Equinox" it states that in the Northern Hemisphere the Vernal Equinox "...occurs when the Sun crosses the equator line, heading north in the sky. This event marks the start of spring in the northern half of the globe. After this date, the Northern Hemisphere begins to be tilted more toward the Sun, resulting in increasing daylight hours and warming temperatures." During the Vernal Equinox the amount of sunshine everyone sees is approximately 12 hours according to the article "SPRING BEGINS – Changes Annually March 19 – March 2" from the website Nationaldaycalendar.com. The article also states that "The amount of sunlight will incrementally increase until the first day of Summer." The Summer Solstice happens in June which is the "...longest period of daylight occurs," according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. What happens in the Southern Hemisphere during the Vernal Equinox on March 20th? The exact opposite happens down in the southern part of the planet where it will be the season of Autumn. The reason is "...the Southern Hemisphere begins to be tilted away from the Sun," according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.
