MAHWAH, NJ — Two North Carolina men are facing "numerous" weapons violations after a Mahwah traffic stop resulted in the seizure of multiple firearms, ammunition and thousands of dollars, Mahwah Police said.
Two officers stopped a car on Route 287 South at 4:39 p.m. Wednesday for "motor vehicle operation violations," police said. Guilherme Desouza Mendes, 19, was driving while Tyrone K. Williams, 20, both of Spring Lake, North Carolina, was the passenger.
While Mendes was getting his vehicle documents out of the glove compartment, police said they saw a box of ammunition.
Williams told officers that a loaded assault rifle was in the truck, and police recovered a "loaded Hi Point .40 caliber carbine rifle."
Officers searched the vehicle further and found what they say is a stolen handgun concealed within a Cheetos bag on the driver's side floorboard. Also recovered were two additional handguns, hollow point ammunition, a ski mask and $4,662.
Both are charged with multiple weapons violations and receiving stolen property. Several motor vehicle summonses were issued to Mendes.
Both were remanded to Bergen County Jail, police said.
