JOLIET, IL — A 43-year-old man facing arrest warrants from DuPage County and his 29-year-old Joliet passenger were arrested Wednesday morning in the 1800 block of McDonough Street. Police say Carl Rutherford of Glendale Heights had a stolen gun and a defaced gun inside his car as well as cocaine and marijuana.
Rutherford was taken to the Will County Jail. He's charged with armed violence, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of controlled substances with intent to deliver, possession of a stolen gun, defacing identification on a gun, marijuana possession and his warrant from DuPage County for failure to appear in court on a drug possession charge.
His Joliet passenger, Alphanso Carter, was taken to the Will County Jail on charges of possession of controlled substances and one charge of marijuana possession, police said.
Joliet officers pulled over Rutherford around 11:45 a.m. on McDonough Street for a vehicle registration violation, reports show.
"Officers observed two firearms in plain view on the lap of Rutherford. Officers ordered Rutherford from the vehicle, and he was taken into custody without incident and the firearms were recovered," Joliet police announced.
One of the guns was reported stolen while the second gun's serial number was defaced, and it was unreadable, reports reflect.
When officers searched Rutherford's clothes, they recovered cocaine and marijuana, police said. Carter also had cocaine and marijuana, police said.
