Description

Kane Tanaka, at 118, not only has the distinction of being the world's oldest living person, but in addition, will be passing the Olympic torch as it goes through Japan this summer from her home town of Shime. Although Kane's family will push her wheelchair for most of the 100-meter stretch, Kane is determined to walk the last few meters for the actual torch-passing. At the nursing home where she resides, Kane stays upbeat and active, enjoying board games and doing math. This, after her retirement at 103 from working in the family's rice shop since she was 19. She raised four children, which resulted in the five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who she looks forward to seeing up-close-and-personal post-COVID.
